September month UG meeting presentations

As always conducting our 3rd User group meeting was a real fun and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The other main aspect of this meeting was that we had twice the number of people than it was for the previous UG meeting. Yes, we ended up with 21 members and conference room was completely full. I would like to thank each and every one of you for attending this meeting and making it a fun filled technical event.
There were two sessions that were taken namely,

#1. Introduction to Indexes & Effective Indexing

Speaker: Deepak Rangarajan
Duration: 90 minutes


Discusses about Indexes and Index types. What are the important index operators to look for while tuning a query. How to cover a query with indexes and avoid lookups & a glance at the SQL Server execution plan.

We had refreshments for 15 minutes within which we discussed about PASS, benefits of registering with PASS, resources available at PASS and about PASS summit. We even had a group photo with our UG members.


#2. Data compression & Effects of Auto-shrinking

Speaker: VidyaSagar
Duration: 75 minutes



What is data compression, when and where can it be used. What are the underlying algorithms being used while compressing data etc..Finally the discussion was about Auto shrinking and its effects on a OLTP production machine during bussiness hours etc.

We are back again for this months UG session. We have a slight change in timing for this week UG due to non-availability of conference room at our usual timings.

Session details are as follows:

#1. Introduction about Indexes and Effective Indexing

Speaker - Deepak Rangarajan

Most of the DBA's who are involved in performance tuning need to know when to use an index and what type of index will be helpful for a query. This session will covers about what is an index and index types etc. When to use which index and how can we effectively use an index to cover a query. Difference between an index seek, scan etc and a glance through the SQL Server execution plan.

We'll have a 15 minute break and refreshments will be provided by us.

#2. Data Compression & Effects of Auto-Shrinking

Speaker - Vidhya Sagar
Duration - 75 minutes


How is compression done internally, what type of algorithms are used etc are covered. Along with that we'll be covering another topic named Auto-Shrinking and whats the effect of this setting on the database.

Chennai SQL Server UG August presentation

The Chennai SQL Server UG for the month of August was held on 22nd of this month, refer this link for the details. It was a great learning experience. There were two sessions.

We'll probably have our next UG on the September 19th 2009. Once the dates are confirmed I'll blog about it. In the forthcoming sessions we are planning to cover something on the performance as well.
